The hardest hole is a long par 4
Not the scary island par 3, not the 600-yard par 5 — the 435-yard par 4 is golf's true bully. The reason is simple: a long par 4 demands two good full shots from everyone, and unlike a par 5 there's no third shot to recover with. Par 3s almost never get the 1-index (23 of 498 here) because a short hole gives the higher handicap a puncher's chance.

How we measured
Profile of holes marked stroke index 1 on 498 scorecards in our database (stroke indexes are mapped on roughly 40% of courses). Distances are computed along each hole's GPS playing line (middle-tee geometry), the same data the Caddie Tap app uses on the course. Facility records that map the same course twice are collapsed, and obvious data outliers are excluded rather than published. Counts reflect what is mapped in our database — a famous course's hand-counted total may run higher. Spot a mistake? The app has a built-in "report a course issue" button.

What is the #1 handicap hole?
The hole rated hardest on the scorecard (stroke index 1) — it's where a stroke is given first in match play. Committees rate it on where higher handicaps most need the help.
Are hardest holes usually par 4s or par 5s?
Par 4s, decisively: 67% of the #1 handicap holes in our data are par 4s, averaging 435 yards. A long par 4 gives strokes back to nobody.
