The Best Golf Courses in America: What 5 Major Rankings Agree On
July 9, 2026 · Caddie Tap course data team
Every magazine publishes a Top 100. They mostly disagree — which is the point. When five independent panel rankings do agree on a course, that's signal. We aggregated the current editions of the five major U.S. panel lists into one transparent consensus score.
How the consensus works
For every list a course appears on, it earns points by position: #1 on a 100-course list is worth 1.00, #50 is 0.51, #100 is 0.01. A course's consensus score is the sum across the five lists — so broad agreement beats one publication's enthusiasm. A course four panels agree is top-40 outranks a course one panel calls top-10. That's the whole formula; there are no editorial thumbs on the scale.

The sources
Five panel rankings feed the consensus: Golf Digest's America's 100 Greatest and 100 Greatest Public Courses (2025-26), GOLF Magazine's Top 100 Courses in the U.S. (2024-25, the current biennial edition), and Golfweek's Best Classic and Modern lists. Each publisher's full ranking lives on their site — we aggregate positions with attribution rather than republish anyone's list.
Transparency notes: Golf Digest blocks automated access, so its positions were transcribed from a public mirror and validated against Golf Digest's own published top eight and its named 2025-26 additions. Golfweek's Classic order is the 2024 edition (Golfweek's 2025 update reshuffled the very top — Pebble Beach, Pine Valley, Augusta — but the full new order isn't public). Golfweek Modern is capped at the 50 verified positions.
Where the panels disagree most
Bethpage Black makes four of five lists but never cracks a top 25 — the people's championship course, respected everywhere, adored nowhere. Meanwhile Augusta National sits behind six courses here despite being the most famous course on earth: panels rank architecture, not aura. And the public-vote rankings look nothing like any of this — see what golfers actually vote for.

What is the best golf course in America?
By consensus across five major panel rankings, Pebble Beach Golf Links — it appears on more of the big lists, higher, than any other course. Single panels differ: Golf Digest and GOLF Magazine both put Pine Valley first.
Why do the rankings disagree?
Different panels, different criteria weights (aesthetics, resistance to scoring, walkability), and different access — few panelists play every candidate. That disagreement is exactly why a consensus is more stable than any single list.
Can you play any of these courses?
Many top-consensus courses are private, but the public side is strong: Pebble Beach, Pacific Dunes, Pinehurst No. 2, Whistling Straits, Bethpage Black and the Ocean Course all take tee times. See our public-courses consensus.
