The honest way to play them

Long par 3s punish ego clubbing more than any hole in golf. The green is usually built to receive a long club — front opening, room short — so the play is the full carry number to the middle, not a hero line at the pin. Front, middle and back numbers matter more here than anywhere; that's the exact read Caddie Tap puts on your wrist.

How we measured

Par-3 yardages from 1,197 GPS-mapped courses, 230–300-yard window (longer records exist in our data but are excluded pending review). Distances are computed along each hole's GPS playing line (middle-tee geometry), the same data the Caddie Tap app uses on the course. Facility records that map the same course twice are collapsed, and obvious data outliers are excluded rather than published. Counts reflect what is mapped in our database — a famous course's hand-counted total may run higher. Spot a mistake? The app has a built-in "report a course issue" button.

FAQ

What is the longest par 3 in America?

Among courses we've GPS-measured, hole 8 at Oakmont Country Club plays 298 yards. Famously, Oakmont's 8th has played up to 300 yards in U.S. Opens.

What club should I hit on a 250-yard par 3?

Whatever gets there — for most golfers that's driver or 3-wood, and there's no shame in it. The mistake is pulling the club your ego prefers and coming up 30 yards short.
