The Least Walkable Golf Courses in America
July 9, 2026 · Caddie Tap course data team
Nobody measures the walk between holes — so we did, on 747 courses: every green to the next tee, all round long. The average is 1,582 yards of pure transfer — more than a mile of walking that isn't golf.

Why modern courses walk long
Classic-era courses were routed for walkers — next tee steps from the last green. Real-estate-era and cart-first designs thread holes between home lots and hillsides, and the transfers balloon. If you love walking golf, this list is your avoid list (or your cart list); our steps-and-calories piece covers what the full round adds up to.
How we measured
Transfers = GPS distance from each green's center to the next tee, holes 1–18, on 747 courses with complete routing (transfers over 900 yards excluded as multi-course routing artifacts). Distances are computed along each hole's GPS playing line (middle-tee geometry), the same data the Caddie Tap app uses on the course. Facility records that map the same course twice are collapsed, and obvious data outliers are excluded rather than published. Counts reflect what is mapped in our database — a famous course's hand-counted total may run higher. Spot a mistake? The app has a built-in "report a course issue" button.

What makes a golf course hard to walk?
Not the golf — the gaps. Green-to-next-tee transfers average about 1,582 yards per round, and cart-first designs stretch single transfers past 400 yards.
How far do you walk between holes?
Across 747 measured courses, about 1,582 yards per round just moving from greens to tees — over a mile before you count the golf itself.
